How to Place Fire Safety Icons

Learn how to place fire safety icons such as fire extinguishers, alarms, exit signs, and assembly points on your evacuation plan using EvacPlan Generator's icon library.

Before You Begin

This tutorial assumes you have already uploaded a PDF floorplan to your project. If not, follow the "How to Upload a PDF Floorplan" tutorial first. Fire safety icons are standardized symbols used on evacuation plans to mark the locations of safety equipment and emergency features. They help building occupants quickly locate fire extinguishers, alarm pull stations, exits, and assembly points.

Click the "Place Icon" button in the toolbar. It has a flame icon. When active, the button turns green and the Icon Picker popup appears.

Browse through the icon categories: Emergency icons include exit signs and assembly points. Fire Equipment includes extinguishers, alarms, hose reels, and more.

Click on the icon you want to place. The selected icon becomes your active placement tool.

Tip: Once you have placed icons on your plan, an "In Use" category appears at the top of the picker showing only the icons you have already used. This makes it quick to place more of the same type.

With an icon selected, you can now click anywhere on the floor plan to place it.

Click on the floor plan at the location where the safety equipment is installed. The icon appears at your click position.

Tip: Place fire extinguisher icons near the actual wall-mounted extinguisher locations. Place exit sign icons above or near exit doors.

To switch to a different icon type, click the Icon Picker again and select a new icon from the library.

Step 4: Adjust and Edit Icons

After placing icons, you can resize, move, or delete them.

Use the Icon Size slider in the toolbar to adjust the size of newly placed icons. Typical sizes range from 30-50 for most floor plans.

Tip: All icons on the plan should be a consistent size so the plan looks professional.

Click on any placed icon to select it. Drag it to reposition, or press Delete/Backspace to remove it.

Icons you have placed automatically appear in the Map Key legend, so viewers know what each symbol represents.

Common Fire Safety Icons

Here are the most commonly used icons on evacuation plans: • Fire Extinguisher — marks the location of portable fire extinguishers • Fire Alarm Call Point — marks manual fire alarm pull stations • Fire Hose Reel — marks the location of fire hose reels • Emergency Exit — marks exit doors and emergency exits • Assembly Point — marks the designated gathering area outside the building • First Aid — marks first aid kit or station locations • Fire Door — marks fire-rated doors along evacuation routes • No Smoking — marks no smoking zones Place all relevant icons that match the actual safety equipment installed in your building.
