Do I need design or CAD experience to use it?
No. EvacPlan Generator is designed to be used without any CAD or graphic design training. You upload an existing PDF floorplan and use simple drag-and-drop tools to place icons, draw routes, and add text. The interface is intuitive and requires no specialized skills.
What makes EvacPlan Generator different from general drawing tools?
EvacPlan Generator is purpose-built for evacuation planning. It includes an ISO fire safety icon library, evacuation route drawing tools with arrowheads, automatic map key generation, PDF layer controls for architectural drawings, and export formatting that matches what fire marshals and inspectors expect. General drawing tools require you to find and import icons, create legends manually, and format output yourself.

Process & Workflow
What file formats can I upload?
EvacPlan Generator accepts PDF floorplans. PDFs are the most common format for architectural drawings and floorplans. The tool supports multi-page PDFs and complex architectural drawings with optional content group (OCG) layers.
Can I create plans for multi-story buildings?
Yes. You can upload multiple PDF floorplans to a single project, one for each floor or area. Each floorplan can have multiple plan pages. When you export, the tool produces one PDF per original floorplan, or a ZIP file containing all PDFs if you have multiple floorplans.
How do I export my finished evacuation plan?
Click the Export button in the editor toolbar. EvacPlan Generator produces a professional PDF that includes your annotated floorplan, header bar, and MAP KEY legend. If your project has multiple floorplans, the export produces a ZIP file containing one PDF per floorplan.
Can I save my work and come back later?
Yes. Your work is automatically saved every 2 seconds. When you log back in, all your projects, floorplans, and annotations are exactly where you left them. You can also use Save As to create snapshot copies of a page at any point.
Can I undo mistakes while editing?
Yes. EvacPlan Generator has full undo and redo support. Press Ctrl+Z (or Cmd+Z on Mac) to undo and Ctrl+Shift+Z (or Cmd+Shift+Z) to redo. Your work is also auto-saved every 2 seconds.
Technical Features
What are the PDF Simplify filters?
The PDF Simplify feature lets you reduce visual clutter in complex architectural drawings. You can filter out thin lines, small text, dashed lines, color fills, and hatching patterns. This helps you focus on the building layout and makes your evacuation plan clearer.
What are PDF layers and how do they work?
Many architectural PDFs contain optional content groups (OCG layers) that separate different drawing elements like electrical, plumbing, and structural systems. EvacPlan Generator detects these layers automatically and lets you toggle them on or off, so you can simplify a complex drawing down to just the walls and doors.
How does the Map Key legend work?
The Map Key is an interactive legend box that automatically shows all the safety icons and evacuation route symbols used on your plan. You can drag it to any position, resize it by dragging the corners, change its border color, and toggle its visibility. The Map Key appears identically in your exported PDF.
Can I customize the header bar on my plan?
Yes. Click the header bar to select it, then use the controls panel to change the background color, adjust the height and font size, and reposition the title text. These customizations are saved with your page and appear in the exported PDF.
What icon styles are available for You Are Here markers?
EvacPlan Generator offers five You Are Here marker styles: Arrow, Map Pin, Crosshair, Star Burst, and Target Circle. Each style renders the icon with a YOU ARE HERE text label below it. The marker appears in the Map Key legend alongside your other icons.
Does zoom affect annotation placement?
No. All annotation tools work correctly at any zoom level. You can zoom in to precisely place icons on detailed areas of your floorplan and zoom out to see the full plan. Annotations maintain their correct positions regardless of the current zoom.
Compliance & Standards
Does the tool meet OSHA and NFPA requirements?
EvacPlan Generator uses internationally recognized ISO fire safety icons and supports creating plans that satisfy the requirements of OSHA 29 CFR 1910.38, NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, NFPA 1 Fire Code, IFC Section 404, and IBC means of egress standards. However, compliance ultimately depends on the accuracy and completeness of your specific plan.
Are the safety icons ISO-standard?
Yes. The icon library includes over 40 symbols based on internationally recognized ISO fire safety standards. These include fire extinguishers, emergency exits, fire hose reels, assembly points, first aid stations, fire alarm call points, and more. These symbols are the same ones used by fire protection professionals worldwide.
Can a fire marshal accept plans made with this tool?
Plans created with EvacPlan Generator use the same ISO-standard symbols and formatting that fire marshals expect. Whether your specific plan satisfies your local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) depends on the accuracy and completeness of your plan content. For projects requiring formal code compliance certification, consult a licensed fire protection engineer.
Do I need to update my evacuation plan regularly?
Yes. OSHA and most fire codes require evacuation plans to be reviewed and updated whenever building layouts change, new hazards are introduced, or employee assignments change. EvacPlan Generator makes updates easy: log in, modify your plan, and export an updated PDF in minutes.
Troubleshooting
My PDF floorplan looks blurry or low quality. What can I do?
The quality of the rendered floorplan depends on the quality of the original PDF. If your PDF is a scanned image at low resolution, it may appear blurry. For best results, use a vector-based PDF exported from CAD software. You can also try the PDF Simplify filters to remove visual noise and improve clarity.
The PDF has too many visual details. How do I simplify it?
Use the Simplify panel to filter out visual clutter. You can remove thin lines, small text, dashed lines, color fills, and hatching patterns. If your PDF has OCG layers, use the Layers panel to toggle off layers you do not need, such as electrical or plumbing systems.
Can I use a JPG or PNG image instead of a PDF?
Currently, EvacPlan Generator only accepts PDF files. If you have a JPG or PNG floorplan, you can convert it to PDF using any free online converter or by printing to PDF from an image viewer before uploading.
My exported PDF looks different from what I see in the editor. Why?
The exported PDF is generated from the same data as the editor view, but rendering differences can occur with complex architectural PDFs. Ensure your Simplify and Layer settings are configured as desired before exporting. The Map Key position, header customization, and all annotations will appear as positioned in the editor.
