Free School Evacuation Plan Template (PDF)

An evacuation plan template designed for schools, colleges and childcare facilities. Download the free PDF, or build accurate per-classroom evacuation maps from your own floorplan with the free online editor.

Why school buildings need an evacuation plan

Schools are educational occupancies with strict egress and drill requirements — most jurisdictions require monthly or termly fire drills and evacuation maps posted in every classroom. Plans should show the route from each classroom to its designated exit, alternate routes, and the outdoor assembly area where roll call is taken.

What's included in this template

  • Print-ready A4/Letter layout with title block (building name, floor, date, revision)
  • ISO 7010 symbol legend (exits, extinguishers, alarm call points, first aid, assembly point)
  • “You Are Here” marker placement guide
  • Primary and secondary evacuation route indicators
  • Assembly point designation box
  • Emergency contacts panel (fire brigade, building manager, first aiders)

How to use it

  1. Download the PDF template and print it, or — much faster — open the EvacPlan editor and upload your own floorplan to build a plan digitally.
  2. Mark all exits on your floorplan, then draw primary evacuation routes from every room to the nearest exit.
  3. Add secondary routes for any area where the primary route could be blocked.
  4. Place ISO 7010 safety symbols: fire extinguishers, manual call points, first-aid stations, and the assembly point.
  5. Add the “You Are Here” marker for the wall location where the plan will be mounted — each mounting location needs its own oriented copy.
  6. Fill in the title block and emergency contacts, then print, laminate, and mount at eye level near exits and lifts.

Frequently asked questions

How often must schools run evacuation drills?

Requirements vary by jurisdiction, but monthly fire drills during the school year are a common requirement for educational occupancies under NFPA 101 and state fire codes. Check with your local fire marshal or education authority for the exact schedule.

Does every classroom need its own evacuation map?

Best practice — and many local codes — call for an evacuation map posted by the door of every classroom, oriented to the room, showing the primary and alternate route to the assembly area.

What should a school assembly point include?

A safe outdoor location far enough from the building for fire-department operations, with clearly assigned areas per class so teachers can take roll quickly and report missing students to responders.
