Free Healthcare Facility Evacuation Plan Template (PDF)
An evacuation plan template for clinics, care homes, dental practices and healthcare facilities. Download the free PDF, or upload your facility floorplan to the free online editor for accurate, inspection-ready maps.
Why healthcare buildings need an evacuation plan
Healthcare occupancies plan for patients who cannot self-evacuate: strategies revolve around horizontal evacuation to adjacent smoke compartments, staged movement, and staff assignments rather than immediate total evacuation. Maps should show smoke-barrier boundaries, refuge areas, and equipment such as evacuation chairs alongside standard exits and routes.
What's included in this template
- Print-ready A4/Letter layout with title block (building name, floor, date, revision)
- ISO 7010 symbol legend (exits, extinguishers, alarm call points, first aid, assembly point)
- “You Are Here” marker placement guide
- Primary and secondary evacuation route indicators
- Assembly point designation box
- Emergency contacts panel (fire brigade, building manager, first aiders)
How to use it
- Download the PDF template and print it, or — much faster — open the EvacPlan editor and upload your own floorplan to build a plan digitally.
- Mark all exits on your floorplan, then draw primary evacuation routes from every room to the nearest exit.
- Add secondary routes for any area where the primary route could be blocked.
- Place ISO 7010 safety symbols: fire extinguishers, manual call points, first-aid stations, and the assembly point.
- Add the “You Are Here” marker for the wall location where the plan will be mounted — each mounting location needs its own oriented copy.
- Fill in the title block and emergency contacts, then print, laminate, and mount at eye level near exits and lifts.
Frequently asked questions
What is horizontal evacuation in healthcare facilities?
Moving occupants through a fire/smoke barrier into an adjacent protected compartment on the same floor, rather than immediately down and out of the building. It is the primary strategy in hospitals and care homes where many occupants can't use stairs unaided.
Do care homes need different evacuation maps than offices?
Yes. In addition to exits and routes, they should mark smoke compartment boundaries, refuge areas, evacuation equipment (ski sheets, evac chairs), and reflect each resident's Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) arrangements.
Will this template satisfy a Joint Commission or fire marshal inspection?
The template covers the standard elements inspectors look for (routes, exits, symbols, assembly/refuge, contacts), but requirements are facility-specific — always confirm details with your accreditation body and local fire authority.
